Just to clarify that, when I listen on "BBC Radio Player" it all happens
within the browser, and I don't know what goes on behind the scenes.

When I download and save the file as detailed in my post of a couple of
weeks ago (details reproduced below) I can then play back with mplayer,
giving the output i reproduced in my last message.

To download the stream:

right click on the link that says "listen to this clip in stand alone
realplayer" and download the .ram or .rpm file

cat that file and you will find an rtsp url

then:

mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile myfilename.ra
rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/bbc7/0800_thu.ra (thats all one line)

or to translate on the fly (although you would still need the right
codec)

(this is a script)

cat enc-net
#!/bin/bash

mkfifo audiodump.wav
mplayer $1 -ao pcm:file=audiodump.wav -cache 32 &
oggenc audiodump.wav -o $2
#---script end

now you can, to follow up the previous example:

enc-net rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/bbc7/0800_thu.ra dads_army.ogg
