That's my prefered indicator too. But Ubuntu's GNOME 2.8 -> 2.10 has done away with the Modem Lights applet in favour of a dumber phone (dialup) icon, with mouseover connection duration info only. May seek out Modem Lights package anyway.
The pon connect dialogue doesn't return the connect speed, whereas wvdial does - will probably look at that too. Ubuntu isn't so friendly for modems, but the GUI network setup tool is working a lot better since Warty -> Hoary.
