I suggest printing this out in windows before rebooting.

at what point does it fail?

you are changing to root first? (via sux -)

you could try running the setup program again. your fiddling may have upset the
settings. the command was

eciconf.sh (Yeah thats right just type it in the terminal and enter)

that will give you this gui:
http://eciadsl.flashtux.org/img/tutorial/capture7_eciconf.sh.png

firstly make sure your username and password, and the VPI:VCI are right. Also
the ppp option was the first one on the list (something about
rfc2364 or something. ahh got it from the screenshot on their page -
option is VCM_RFC2364.

Also check the right modem is selected - Dynalink ALE070.

Don't worry about the provider dns, it seemed to pick them up over ppp
just fine.

Click "Create Config"

try logging in again. (remember to be root. if you get errors write them down
or copy and paste the contents of the terminal window to a text
file, and save it to the windows partition - if you can ::NTFS :(

If that doesn't work try different sync.bin files.

Reading the eciadsl site tells me that there can be problems with the
synch.bin files, you need to find one that works by trial and error. If
i recall what happened on Tuesday the first one synch00.bin didn't work,
but the second one synch01.bin did work. Keep trying them until you find one it
likes.
