Aha found it

hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdc: packet command error: error=0x54

or

hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest
Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=21133566,
sector=162063
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:05 (hda), sector 162063

and repeat those ad nauseum.

and yes it wouldn't be the first time my PCs done something and people
have suggested the hard drive is about to give up the ghost. Really
should see about getting a new one.
