Note that both have more subtle contrast then simply white on black.
More pleasing to the eye. Very subjective, so IMHO of course :-)

Didn't help that when I had a look at that it had a dirty great brilliant orange banner ad. Ruined the dark goth aesthetics totally.

Still that page had every primary colour as some form of heading, this is generally regarded as a graphic design no-no unless you are heading for a kiddy toybox look.
