Even if you had used grep hd, the result might have been misleading.
Your cdrecord output I took as the drive in question being present. This
means that the kernel must have been able to communicate with the drive
at least somewhat. cat /proc/ide/hd?/model shows which drive is
connected to which cable btw, and still works once the dmesg ring buffer
has filled and overwritten the oldest lines.
