You probably shouldn't flash the firmware... It's a rental item after all.

Okay, it's a pet peeve of mine that occasionally one happens across an interesting and relevant thread, then you get to the end and there is no clear solution or resolution. So, here is the end of this thread: Symptoms: - TelstraClear/Paradise cable modem connected to a hardware router. This is a fixed IP address. Port 22 open and mapped to a machine on home LAN. - All incoming requests to port 22 logged by ssh server to /var/log/auth.log - From Friday 10th June at 18:00 all incoming connections appear to originate from the fixed IP address. This made it look like I was being hacked from my own address, rather than from all over the world. - On Monday, all incoming ssh sessions were being dropped after a random and short time. Telstra's response: - Diagnostics indicate all is well with my cable modem, and no changes had been made on Friday night. They suggested I reset the router, or connect a PC directly to the cable modem. Resolution: - Resetting the router fixed both problems. I did not connect a PC directly to the cable modem. Further action: - I suspect something on the network (either internal or external) tripped a flaw in the router. I have Googled for evidence, but nothing specific has cropped up. There is a new version of firmware for the router, which I will install anyway. Thanks for all suggestions, Andy
