Just recently there has been a NZ Open Source Society project to stop a
patent application from MS to patent the use of XML for word processing
documents.
After I read this recently I thought that what MS is trying to do is
produce an XML Word(tm) file format that is open then to ensure that
software that competes against the MS portfolio is prevented from using
that same format with patents.
They are trying to get European govt contracts that demand open file
formats but ensure that they can then stop people using those formats.
As far as we can tell this is a misuse of patent law and NZOSS will be
fighting it.
