I can second Seagate as I've been using Barracuda drives for a few years now with no problems. I was highly impressed by how quiet the ATA IV drives were a few years ago. The SATA drives I'm using at the moment make a bit of head-noise but I think that's being amplified a lot by the case.
Critical work gets multiple, relatively independent backups so I only consider reliability as far as the inconvenience of having to reinstall my OS and apps.
