It sounds like you genuinely want to help the punters Nick. Bravo. In fact, possibly the installfest should be consigned to the dark ages and replaced with the config-fest! For sure, installing a distro like Suse is pretty much a piece of cake, but getting the printer/digital camera/usb stick to work can be another matter. These days who needs to compile the kernel? Such things are for monks in 15th century cloisters! (That's an in-joke by the way ;-)
I propose the install-fest be replaced with a config-fest on pre-installed distros with the aim of getting the punter beyond "installed" to productive.
