I was in this very predicament last night. Almost forced to eat my bytes. I had just installed ubuntu (server install - no gui) and replaced the CDROM with another hard drive (going to set up software RAID 1). Anyway, I couldn't apt-get install emacs (or any other emacs-like editor I could think of) because the sources.list needed updating, and I couldn't update it because I refuse to learn vi. Then I discovered that nano is installed by default. Yay! No vi! You do realise that vi is the centre of evil, do you not? Cheers, Carl.
