Yes, I did, just as you describe, and setting the DMA (hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc) nailed it completely. Don't know what udma is, sorry.

Did you ever have choppy DVD playback problems?

I too am running Ubuntu, and have installed xine. The playback seems
to micropause every few sconds, and the sound synchronisation can be a
bit off after a while too. It's not unwatchable, but not as smooth as
in windows.

I haven't had a really good go at fixing it, but did notice that the
DVD drive is using udma. Probably a caching thing somewhere.

Cheers,
Carl.

Having failed to get either mplayer or the default Totem install to play
DVDs on my (Ubuntu) machine, I took Rik's advice last night and gave
Totem-xine a go. Success - it leapt into life! This morning I rattled
through every DVD I own, and it cheerfully played the lot, including
LOTR extended versions.

I've installed libdvddecss (spollink?) and win32codecs.

Totem now also cheerfully plays .avi, .wmv, .asf, .mov, and .mpg - in
fact, every video file I could find in a quick hunt through my hard-drive.

Using "top", I observed that mplayer was maxing out the CPU: >90% usage.
I assume that mplayer was taking everything the kernel would give it,
and still falling short. Pretty bad - it's an 1150MHz P3.

By contrast, Totem-xine ticks along at a relaxed 30-33% CPU load.

Microshaft's grip on my hard-drive is starting to look tenuous.
Happy, happy.
Douglas.
