I simply thought that asking the manufacturer would be simple and avoid me opening up the brand new unit (and possibly voiding the warranty).

sometimes you can get away with getting a couple of sewing pins and (being very careful not to short them together) push one each through to each conductor of the cable and then measure your voltage like that.
It shouldn't damage the insulation too much and is virtually invisible.
