No DVD Reader,

I have the first 3 cd's of the Debian install. 3.1 I think.
I tried installing Debian .. yesterday or the day before but couldn't get
the mouse to work.
I will get it as far as I can with Debian 3.1 tomorrow.

Looks like debian's probably the best bet. tbh it would be an idea to get
installed before you get there. Does it have a dvd reader?

I would like to bring along a computer to get configured if that is ok.

There are two problems. I wont be able to make it until just after 9pm (I
have a music lesson) and it doesn't have an operating system installed
because I can't decide what one to install..

It is an AMD K6-2/400 with 128Mb SD-Ram. 9.3GB HDD.

I will also bring along my synthesizer, it is a novation KS4.

The soundcard has a MIDI port and I have MIDI cables.

I want to be able to record digital audio, and MIDI events.
I don't care what software gets used, or how it all works, I just want
something that works.

I also don't need to do any editing of audio or complex audio operations I
will use my other computer for that. I just need to record the raw audio
and
MIDI events...

If there is anything you think I should ask my music teacher before coming
then please let me know. He owns and operates a high quality recording
studio.
Has he ever used Linux to record midi? Or anyone else he knows?..

I've run some trials on your behalf Ant, & think you've got a hurdle ahead.

My conclusion re Ubuntu is that the KDE support is insufficient to run Rosegarden properly, easily. Even Kmidi doesn't run yet (it's asking for a sequencer; Rosegarden's won't restart since the initial install). I'd expect Kubuntu to be better, but Debian worse (an install of that is much more geek-demanding than Ubuntu). So tomorrow night is likely to confirm all this, and lead you to a..

KDE-dedicated desktop install (Rosegarden's native base).

Gentoo is recommended, but tricky & time-consuming - you'd have to arrange further help. A Suse install is doable in an hour (only just, including set/pack-up), and should give you the quick & extensive package support you need. As yet untested for midi play/record purposes tho; - Volker?

Or has someone got a Kubuntu disk available?
