Every SUSE release I've seen includes these packages. Your media must be
cr*p.

wants gcc to build the vmmon module, and no isn't an acceptable answer!
Yes we all know that the vmware modules need to be compiled for your
running kernel, and compiling anything needs a compiler. If you force it
enough, you may find that some vmware modules which strictly speaking
aren't right for your kernel work anyway.
SUSE 10.0 had 2 different versions: a public OSS only release, and a
shipped version also including non-OSS software. The non-OSS software is
available from somewhere I believe. I've already told you that gcc is on
CD 3,
Thanks, I am paying attention to the best of my ability. CDs 1 and 3
should be downloaded for me when I arrive at work in the morning.

please tell us where you got that useless DVD of yours from.
A give away at the CLUG meeting a couple of weeks ago.
Or is your
installation somehow seriously broken?
For obvious reasons (9GB), SUSE didn't put the dual-layer DVD iso
online. It's not too difficult to ask around for a copy?
Of course not. But when I have a DVD that says "Full Suse 32 bit
version" it's fair to believe that this is what I already have!
I can make you
one if you like, but not for free.
Have you checked out gwdg.de like I suggested?
Yes but it was far from obvious that...
Because you can add
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source/
... this is there.
to your installation sources in yast, and then install gcc from
.../suse/i586/gcc*
Fantastic! There is my missing link, thank you for that. I will do this
in the morning.
Cheers,
Roger
This is a good example of why I suggest to get a distro complete on a
DVD (or CD for those who like to juggle), because then it's plug'n'go.
