Yes, I read somewhere that old modems are a good source (SuperShed!!).  I 
sort of gave up with the project though.  It works- and it's cool to be 
able to connect my cordless phone base station to the PC and wander around 
with the phone whilst using Skype, but the echo is too bad for the other 
end.  I had one highly successful call using it, where there was little or 
no echo, so I am not sure whether it's a hardware/software/network problem 
and what makes it get worse, or what could make it get better.  However, I 
am sure there are many people here who would like to speculate wildly on 
this matter.

Like I said, I'd be willing to compare notes with other hardware hackers.
