This sort of behaviour is often caused by serious spikes on the mains 
supply. Have you got a decent power line filter, imho essential for any 
computer on a circuit also used by rotating machinery?

Perhaps there is a sewing machine, or what have you like a fridge or 
freezer, which has a stuffed RFI suppressor nearby? Carting around a 
portable AM radio is a simple way to find sources of RFI.
