I understood your posting entirely.  Re-using old equipment is something I 
do a lot of (and yes, I know where the USB header is on the motherboard).

Before you roll out too many of these boxes you should take into account 
their projected remaining lifetime, availability of spares, amount of time 
taken to configure and maintain (esp. if every box is subtly different) and 
power consumption.  I think it's a great project, but it might bite you in 
the bum if you don't think of this sort of thing.

IMHO you need standard hardware, and standard software (all preconfigured 
on a CD- no hard drive).  Development is easy, as you can have identical 
machines in your lab[1].  When the hardware is no longer available, you 
specify a new system.

And really, it is MHO.  I am not trying to prescribe what you should do, or 
diminish what you have done.
