This step can take a very long time, esp the first time round. I've done it on a PIII-450, 640MB, and CPU sat at 100% overnight. I don't think it was doing something useful though, and have the suspicion that switching consoles (ctrl-alt-f2, ctrl-alt-f7) got it unstuck. Can you try switching consoles at that point? Also, attach strace to the process taking 100% CPU, and ctrl-C strace after a few seconds. When it goes, that catalogs thing may take about a minute (rough guess) but the first time may be longer.
