Thanks Jim, that's fantastic and would have been so much help if it had existed when I started.

It seems that getting vmware up and running is more complex than qemu, but if it runs faster then there's a benefit.

I still haven't installed the accelorater for qemu

No. 45 words.

Create a vdmx disk image file with qemu-img
Create a vmx config file with http://www.easyvmx.com
Tell it to access the real CD
Boot the new environment, from CD (via the vmware BIOS)
Partition the disk as seen from the live CD, and install into it.

Timezone selection isn't clear, as windows f#$%s up such things. But it works.
