Thanks Nick,
I installed 5.1 as I don't have 6.06 media yet.
I did have a quick look over the ubuntu wiki and a number of other sites
on the subject. I found lots of references to an intel chip, however,
per my question below, I suspect I'm not using an intel chip set.
Joanna and I have found recently that HP don't ship the same hardware
under the same model number to all parts of the world. Having learnt
this lesson I thought I'd just post to list for anyone who's had some
personal experience with a machine purchased in NZ recently.
INSTALLATION REVIEW
I'm still not that impressed with ubuntu's installer. I used MDK10 to
do the disk patitioning work first. I am still impressed by just how
well and easy MDK10 is to install and its funcitonality in the
installation area.
I then over wrote the mdk install with ubuntu 5.1 and did the upgrades
on line.
It seemed to get all the hardware bar the wifi (which is why I'm not
using it this morning and am emailing from my XP set up).
I found that u5 mounted the ntfs pats as read only/root access. What
the point is in that I don't know. It took me 10 minutes to fix after I
realised that I had to umount it before u5 would let me remount it with
read access for all users (per ubuntu wiki - yes, a very useful site).
I have forgoten where the feature is to do the update to u6.06, thou
after my last experience I'm a little hesitant and wondering if I should
wait till it becomes a little more stable.
Cheers Don

which version of ubuntu? i believe 6.06 has the driver for thta card as it is
in very recent kernels. 5.10 doesn't. ubuntu wiki covers it well.

Has anyone set up wifi on one of these new HP laptops in ubuntu and know
what the required driver is?
I did an lspci and I assume that the chip is the broadcom entry,
No, I haven't googled, I only just got ubuntu installed in the last 10
minutes, this is just a quick mail incase someone else has done it
before and can just point me in the right direction.
Cheers Don
