For those who were watching during the break, the xorg.conf file I had saved from last month was now not showing a mouse pointer (mouse was otherwise fine though). This is a more common problem; meanwhile I had installed the nvidia binary driver, perhaps that has something to do with it. Running sax2 (that's SUSE for "make me a xorg.conf") created a functional (with mouse pointer) xorg.conf using the nvidia driver; sax2 did detect the projector and adjusted accordingly. My CRT xorg.conf was in fact not being used, so there's no telling whether it would have worked.
I'm intrigued that a secondary gimmick, making a calendar with gwenview, received so much attention... The nice thing I noticed about that calendar was that it started the week on the right day, i.e. not American.
