That's looking good - also
http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=&model=&bus=any&v=04b8&p=0112
shows the scanner as fully supported.

Beyond that the news isn't so good I'm afraid, you've passed all the
hurdles (sane communicates with scanner and identifies model
correctly).

Possibilities I can see:

* kernel problem
* strange system config problem (not likely)
* bug in sane
* hardware issue

No suggestions from me except for the last: pull out all(!) USB
devices, then plug only the scanner back in. I have a flatbed scanner
which effectively disables the adjacent USB connection (probably by
sucking too much power). USB connectors always come in pairs from the
mobo, the "adjacent" one is the other one of the pair.

Also file a bug report with ubuntu, wait and hope (it's very likely an
ubuntu-specific problem).
