Hi,  I lurked on this list for some years, and have just tried to use linux again (last time was with mandrake back in 2000 but my hardware was not up to it).

Anyway, I've aquired a second hand pc (1.2GHz celeron, 384mb ram) and managed to lose the XP install key while blowing it away for a clean install.
So, I thought I'd try ubuntu after seeing lots of positive comments here.

I have it installed and running but have couple of things I can't find where to change.

1.  Screen refresh rate - I'm only offerred 61hz regardless of resolution chosen.  Does this imply a wrong video driver?  If so, where do I see drivers and go about changing them? (I really hope it's point and click). Or is something else required?

2.  Modem connection - under the network settings I set up ppp with my isp details, but can't get it to work or dial up.  It also won't auto-detect my modem. The modem is one of those winmodem things I think.  So, is this driver issue also? How should I go about correcting it?

Regards,
  Bryce Stenberg.
