Hi,

Please excuse my ignorance in these matters.....

Regarding the monitor refresh rate issue - it's just an old 14" CRT that
should be able to do 72Hz at 800 X 600 resolution, but looking through
xorg.conf I really not sure which line to change, nor how what I need
relates to horizontal sync (I take it vertical refresh rate is my 72Hz)
?

Is there some standard setting for a generic monitor to get this setting
(for example like the 'default monitor' under windows).

And should I be modifying the file in /etc/X11 or the one in
/usr/share/xresprobe?

The video card is on the motherboard - a gigabyte GA-6VEML - google
indicates under windows it would use a Trident 8500 vga driver. Does
this have any bearing on anything?

I'm still looking at the modem issue...

(and sorry for top posting -> using outlook ).

Regards,
  Bryce Stenberg

Most likely the monitor capabilities are not properly reported whn xorg
probes the monitor. You may therefore need to manually provide the
horzontal sync and vertical refresh rates to the xorg.conf file. You can
often find the rates for your monitor from the back of the monitor, or
the instruction book, or by googling the monitor make & model.

yes it is a driver issue. use the scanmodem utility from here
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/ and report back its findings.
