A guess is that this is the disk area set aside for the swap space for XP.

Windows is Windows, and Linux is Linux. There is a system around which 
allow _some_ Windows programs to run in Linux. You might care to try out 
your ham radio programs in the Wine windows emulator running on Linux.

Yes. OpenOffice.org has been produced to run in separate versions for 
Windows and Linux. So yes you will need to have another binary to run 
under Linux. However you will find that all the Linux distributions have 
it as part of their offerings on the CD/DVD.
