First up, my post was really me just reporting back on the issue rather
than asking for help.
I've had a couple of goes at this issue and know what I need to do next.
Specifically I need to double check the ntfs pat is defraged properly.
I had the LES kids look at it last time and was attempting to teach
something at the same time so wasn't all that focused on the issue.

No, of course not. I was pointing that out only because it struck me as

What version of qtparted are you running, and where did you get it?
What ever version is in the mepis 6 distro
And are you sure you aren't using qtparted?

I also used gparted, the latest version of their web site.
What is the problem with the tool provided by the distro you actually
want to use?
