Initially I'd tried 'identify -verbose file' to spot that image differences were present, and 'compare a b c' which doesn't really do what I wanted. Prompted by a couple of "use ImageMagick" responses I've fiddled about some more and come up with 'convert a b -compose difference -composite' which seems to do the trick.
