re:Kppp internet setup

Just a thought that when I tried to connect (56K Dial-up) using the Kppp 
to set up the connection,
it dials and I can hear the answering modem coming back..... it got to 
the point where I received "Logging on to network"  then sat there and 
timed out.
Would it maybe looking for the Password at that point in time and not 
seeing it.......the password was entered during the set up procedure......
I maybe a mile off but just a thought
