Yes.  It was working with my external modem.

Wouldn't /etc/ppp/kpp-options be a template file?  The specific user's kppp 
settings would be in their home directory.

Hmm.  Just checked- it is ~/.kde/share/config/kppprc

Yes, but other people have this working.  I'll admit it's sometimes more 
cost-effective to give up, but, but, but.  I can't resist a challenge...

Nothing obvious.  On the CD there are boot files and then a big image file. 
 No packages file that I can see.
