This sounds like what I struck around ndiswrapper for broadcom wireless - 'non-standard upgrades' can't (all) be catered for - too diverse.

How to undo the clash of setup methods that results is probably beyond 'your average Ubuntu user', certainly in terms of time input to fix. Though I'm sure you could fathom the tangle quicker than I Douglas.

Quick answer: step away & do a clean install (multiple partitions pre-prepared smooths the backup process).

Yet another thing that broke with my Dapper upgrade. Nautilus now says:

smb:/// is not a valid location

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpSamba says:

If you want to access shared folders, drives and printers on a
Windows computer (that is, act as a client with Windows servers),
you only need a smbfs plugin.

Ubuntu and Gnome make it easy to access files on a windows network
share... Open the Computer Menu, then click on "Network". You'll see
a "windows network" icon, open it.

This is true. No effort required at all. Tests done with liveCDs on a library network this week accessed a whole suite of machines through the "windows network" icon. Just brilliant. Didn't have pass access though of course ;-)

I have smbfs 3.0.22-1ubuntu3.1
I can ping other boxes on the network OK.

Must be a software mangle.
