If Kppp can detect the Lucent Agere modem with its "Query Modem" tool you can be sure that the problem is with Kppp or /etc/ppp/options configuration. For my Lucent modem I use the init ATZ in the Kppp "Modem --> Modem Commands" window. Also check that the Device tab has setting "CR" for line termination and Hardware flow control. --- keith.
