Indeed, Telecom couldn't care less about what happens to _our_ equipment, but they do care to a considerable degree about 240v AC getting onto _their_ precious lines and exchanges through the wrong orifice, and possibly thence into other subscribers equipment.
imho, their paranoia about 240v AC getting into telephone lines is probably basically quite a Good Thing (TM), ( I really do not want to be electrocuted by 240v AC when plugging in a phone ) even if they do sometimes seem to apply it in an anti-competitive way. -- CS
