Because some stupid admin declared the website to be www.someplace.nz and forgot to add an alias someplace.nz for the webserver to also respond to. Or use an auto-redirect. In defence of said stupid admin however are the ignorant masses of the general public: if it doesn't start with "www." they wouldn't have a clue what to do with it. I've been asked to make sure website X is www... because otherwise the Dear Oldes would get terribly confused. Obviously I made sure both would work.
