I agree, unless you are using VoIP specifically for talking between two 
parties and two parties only then - at this point in time - it's most useful 
if it's integrated with the PSTN.

The Gumstix are very cool though, I have been wanting to use one for something 
for ages.

It would be possible to use the Gumstix with Astlinux on a LAN with no 
transcoding between formats, you could also use an external FXO device such 
as the Linksys SPA3102 to hop off to the PSTN.

Probably not particularly practical, but definitely possible :)
