I suspect that the real function of the crank was to wind up media traction.

imho, the OLPC machine will take a while to take off because the MIT wallas 
have not, so far from my reading anyway, set up the all important support 
networks or, perhaps more importantly, a supply of course-ware. The costs of 
which are not included in the notional "$100".
