Correct, if you wish to restrict access to the photographs to members of the photo group then you need to set the group id to photo and set the set group id bit on the /home/data/photos directory as well. vis:-
ls -ld /home/data/photos/ drwxrwsr-t 2 root photo 3 Oct 15 18:34 /home/data/photos/ For the users' convenience you might care to make a symbolic link from their respective home directories to /home/data/photos. You can make this automagic when users are added by adjusting the contents of /etc/skel ( afaik this directory path may be distro dependent )
