There is, fairly obviously, no one-size-fits-all solution. I've noted
the following:

Users brought up on Windows have difficulty in distinguishing an
Operating System from a Desktop.

Windows users also do not readily understand the concept of running a
program on one machine while displaying its GUI on another, yet do
understand Desktop replication via VNC or similar.

Users who are unhappy with GNOME on Linux are much happier with KDE.

Long-time Red Hat users are generally happier on GNOME.

Any misbehaving applications *must* be fixed promptly, as their
behaviour will be blamed on Linux.

Novice Linux users still cannot install Samba shares, printers or sound
without assistance.
