I would always go for a 64 bit desktop, the additional cost is low and open source software by and large does support it. I am not having any trouble. Out of 3 commercial apps I'm using, 2 are only 32bit but work just fine, the 3rd is 64 bit. All my browser stuff works too, and some of that is supposedly only 32 bit. If you're expecting to use this computer for the next 3 years, go 64 bit because the appsoft situation is not going to get worse.
