My question was 'how many new gnu/linux users have resulted?', though not stated clearly enough.

5 at this point.

Though, I will keep them next year and add more year 9.

Ah! Cool! So they're the opposite of 'in need of easy electives', as might have been assumed. - Very hopeful.

Yes.

Next year things will pick up in pace as well because in the first class it would take an hour to set up equipment, now it takes 10 minutes.

'Did you have to supply them a take-home PC (+ ?)' for them to become gnu/linux adopters? &

No. At present they're doing their own thing at home.

The Oxford kids are ahead of the Riccarton kids in that respect.

'How do we know they wouldn't copy doze over it, & flog the box off?'

See: http://www.tcn.bowenvale.co.nz/content/view/8/3/

That will be the concept for xmas hols. That way, they can learn more but I can keep track of equipment. Meet two objectives with one hit.

Given their age, the concept of being able to get things is a bit new to them. (if that makes sense)

'Special books?' etc. ...

No need. The library is full of them. I have assigned them a few reading reviews. They're not taking it to seriously at present (hell, they're 13 and 14)

They also have been using the library system to reserve items from the central library.

My objective has been to get them to understand the range of resource out there and use it.

We have also spoken about the fact that people in this market make a living from publications, hence, you want kewl free oss then support the cause by doing a little reading each week.

Early days yet, so good to see whatever progress.

Yes. It really is just early days. They're really keen to push on. Not having net access has been very limiting in some requests.

I also have to confess I'm not a teacher. I'm finding my way as well. Next year I'll be much better at it and we'll achieve more learning outcomes more quickly than we are right now.

Cheers Don
