I think the thing is, how did John manage get the interview to start with?

I don't have much experience in applying for jobs but... It really depends on 
the individual HR department, some may value practical experience very highly 
but I'd imagine that the majority value pieces of paper higher.

Coming back to my first sentence, without the piece of paper you may not get 
in the door to start with.
