As the nearest rellie with a Windows box is >10,000 km away, no grief
with Windows. All our strife has been with Linux.

Decided to update logcabin from FC 4 to Ubuntu 6.06 to be consistent
with our other machines. Result: Ubuntu repartitioned the (SATA) disk
but then couldn't recognise any of the partitions.

Reinstalled FC 4, which recognised the partitions that the Ubuntu
installer had created, but didn't recognise the network (on-board Intel
e1000). Much head-scratching as I tried to remember how I had got the
e1000 driver installed previously.

Decided to stick with RedHat-based systems for the time being. Got a
magazine copy of Mandriva 2007. Beautiful, slick installation, until it
refused to recognise the mouse (a bog standard Microsoft optical mouse).

Tried FC 6, which worked. Then tried reinstalling vlc (the only way to
get Concert FM at logcabin's location). After much fiddling with yum
and repositories, managed a yum update and installation of vlc from
an .rpm from livna.

Now FC 6 boots but X doesn't. I have to login as myself, su - to root,
rm a lock file, exit to myself, startx and we're happy for a while. The
system runs with the vesa generic driver; the graphical display
adjustment tool shows the existence of the Intel (on-board 945GM) driver
but won't install it (but would, apparently, install it for a second
display - ???). Otherwise all's well until shutdown looms - at log-out
I just don't get the option of shutting down, and even if I exit to a
shell and invoke shutdown now, the power stays on.

I miss dpkg, apt-get and synaptic!
