Well just because the avi is 600-700MBs doesn't mean the mpeg in (s)vcd will be! Anyway the problem is not that. The problem is that the input file doesn't seem to be recognised by ffmpeg. Although the ffmpeg may recognise the .avi format, that doesn't guarantee it will recognise codec the file is encoded with. Do you have mplayer? if so you might also have midentify, which is helpful in identifying codecs etc. If not let me know and I will post it, its a very short bash script (the comments are longer than the script proper).
