( the're literally dozens of them - some work with Linux really well,
but there are many which are completely incompatible. )

That is to say: the manufacturer and the model number as a bare minimum.
While the best way to find this info. is to use the script Nick spoke
of, a start might be to use the Windows hardware wizard. ( or whatever
terminology currently MS uses ) Please copy down the details exactly
and tell us  what they are.

Probably the best way to get on to the Internet from linux via dial-up
is to get yourself a hardware second hand external modem. They are
available for about $10, now that so many people are switching over to
ADSL or Cable connections.
