Can I unmount a live cd so I can use the DVD burner? Else I'm going

Has the box got a network card in it?
I often use a Linux Live CD to copy files from "broken" Windows
machines to a networked shared folder before rebuilding.

I can lend you a card if you need and if you live near me (Parklands)
I could even bring a laptop to copy files to temporarily.
If it hasn't got a network card and the amount of precious data is relatively small - megs, rather than gigs - it is quite possible to use the parallel ports and a 'fastlinks' cable.

imogen ~ # modprobe plip
imogen ~ # ifconfig plip0 10.0.0.1

Set up the other end similarly, but obviously using a different ip address. Start the ssh daemon on the live cd and use scp or the fish:// konqueror protocol to move the files.

I've just finished extracting about 500mb data from a corrupted xp(oked) box using a usb card
reader & cf card, and knoppix. As a matter of interest there were a number of large
"jpg" files in My Pictures which copied to much smaller files, and when examined
with khexedit were found to contain rubbish text. They would not delete from the card and rm
-R produced the msg 'read only file system' . The fs is actually vfat. I cleared them by
reformatting the card in the camera it belongs in.
