Thanks for all the suggestions. Thought I'd post a quick update.

Testdisk can't see anything. The gpart program sees the partition, but it will 
not write back to the disk, or to the iso ( needs a physical disk device ), or 
( surprisingly ) to the .iso written back to another disk. If only I could 
extend gpart to create an iso of the partition it can see...
