Thanks Guys
I'm just fighting the good fight with this machine at present... some
prat got busy with a win98 cd after realising that that 'grub thingo'
wasn't something they understood...
Now I'm just playing around to see if I can put it back together...
Help would NOT be appreciated... I haven't done my googling yet :)
Cheers Don

Chris, or anyone else, do you know what ram this thing takes off the top
of your head.
Look at http://www.thinkwiki.org for all things ThinkPad related, including
lots and lots of stuff on getting various aspects of Linux working correctly
given the peculiarities of each model.
Any ideas what should be paid to boost it from 256 to 512 or a gig?
PriceSpy suggests that a 256MB module of the appropriate type is around $73
new. 512MB is around $198, so you're looking at spending $400ish to get
1GB... not exactly cheap.
You might save some money using second hand modules, but how much you'd want
to trust them is another matter--if you go this route, make sure you run
memtest86 for a couple of hours and won't have any trouble returning faulty
modules.
Actually, the advice to run memtest86 applies for new modules too... better
to catch problems early.
