Do it again...

with lots of examples.

I still don't understand how they work properly.

I've read the man and tutorial, but reading the actual script is often beyond me... perhaps it's just an experience thing and you have to really use it to understand it.

I'm often trying to do something complex at the same time as learning, not a good look

We have plenty of experienced people who could do that.
Especially if they could point out the subtle differences between the
various
implementations.

Or even me if no-one puts up their hand.
We could make it a short(ish) talk with an extended Q&A time.
It's Unix/Linux/etc lore after all.
