I read the rules a few years back, and I put money on that fixed wiring must be single core (or up to 3 strands) and of colour code XYZ (American I think). Yes even the colours are prescribed. Flexible wiring must have colour code brown/blue/yellow+green. That's for mains wiring, and remember that there are only very few exceptions and with strong constraints for doing any fixed mains wiring yourself (unless you have a registered elctricians license). For data cables, which are low voltage, there are no rules and you can please yourself. However, mains voltage rules require that that cable ducts for mains voltage cables must not be shared with low voltage cables. That's the reason you see two sets of ducts running through buildings.
