I have it working with my Intel 855GM based Acer laptop.
The external screen is 1024x768 and the laptop screen is 1280x800. I haven't done much maximising, so can't comment on that problem. And I haven't had any problems dragging stuff to/around the main screen. My main screen is the external, which is a bit of a pain. Must change it sometime. The major problem I have is that I now need to select a different xorg.conf file depending on what is required: 1) laptop only 2) dual-head xinerama 3) dual_head clone (Which I'll use in the presentation at the meeting tomorrow) I can mail you my xorg.conf file if you wish. Has anyone here successfully set up a dual head system with Xinerama? I've got 90% there, there are just some little issues that are killing my enjoyment! Maximising a window on the main screen causes it to maximise partially across the two screens. I'd love to get the screens working at different resolutions. There are certain places on the main screen that I can't drag windows to I've been talking with a number of people and their solutions have improved some things but I can't get past these last hurdles.
